Gozo Tragedy Exhibition at the National Archives of Malta, Gozo Archive

On 30 October 1948, 27 people who wanted to return home for a long weekend boarded a luzzu at Marfa at 6.15pm in pitch darkness after the official ferry trip to Gozo was cancelled. Less than an hour later, the overcrowded boat sank, and within minutes 23 people drowned at Taċ-Ċawl on the Qala coast.

The photos of all the victims, which have been gathered following months of research by Paul Falzon, will be exhibited for the first time in an exhibition organised by the Gozo Archive within the National Archives of Malta. The exhibition is on until 30 November 2023.

In addition, the Gozo Regional Development Authority in collaboration with Msgr. Dr Joseph Bezzina, launched a book titled, ‘1948 Tragedy in the Gozo Channel – The Untold Account’.
